EkG/ ECG

Biol 4: Human Physiology

Lab 8 – Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)

Introduction

In this lab, you will learn about the intrinsic conduction system of the heart and gain a basic understanding of how to read an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).

Part I – Intrinsic Conduction System of the Heart

Watch the video here and answer the questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLBMwcvOaEo (“The Heart, Part 2 – Heart Throbs: Crash Course A&P by CrashCourse)

  1. Starting with the sinoatrial (SA) node, describe the order that electrical impulses flow through the intrinsic conduction system of the heart. Use terms like AV node, SA node, Bundle Branches, Bundle of His, and Purkinje fibers.

  1. What type of cell-cell junction is important in allowing signals from one part of the intrinsic conduction system to transfer to the next part of the intrinsic conduction system?

  1. At what point is the impulse temporarily delayed? Why?

  1. Define the following three terms: tachycardia, bradycardia, and fibrillation.

Part II – EKG Basics

Watch the video here and answer the questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FThXJUFWUrw

  1. Draw an EKG diagram. Label the P-wave, QRS complex, and T-wave. Do not copy-paste an image from the internet! (Draw it yourself and copy it here)

  1. On your EKG drawing, label what happens in the cardiac cycle in the following situations:

During the P-wave…

During the QRS complex…

During the T-wave…

  1. On your EKG drawing, label the duration (in seconds or milliseconds) of each of the following:

Duration of the P-wave…

Duration of the QRS complex…

Duration of the T-wave…

Part III – EKG Set-up

Watch the video here and answer the questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV7HjpLpHcE

  1. Draw an outline of the human body and draw in where all of the electrodes should be placed for a 12-lead EKG. Copy-paste your drawing here.

Submit the answers to all the above questions via the Canvas Submission link found in the Lab Module! If you are handwriting directly on the images, then please scan or take a close-up photo of your work, then turn it into a PDF document for submission. Alternatively, if you write on the images electronically, then please turn your work into a PDF document for submission.
