correlation coefficient

Assignment # 4

Neuroimaging social rejection: A study examined the correlates of social exclusion (a social stressor) by neuroimaging an activity in the anterior cingulate cortex (a part of the brain whose activity is associated with physical pain). Study subjects filled out a questionnaire that assessed the degree to which they felt excluded from a social activity (Distress). A functional MRI was then used to measure activity in the cumulate cortex. Data:

ID Distress Fmri_ACC
1 1.2 -0.05
2 1.9 -0.04
3 1.1 -0.03
4 2.5 -0.02
5 2.2 -0.02
6 2.7 0.02
7 2.0 0.02
8 2.2 0.03
9 2.6 0.03
10 2.8 0.03
11 2.8 0.06
12 3.3 0.08
13 3.7 0.012

Create an excel file with the data above or you can download this data file from the online resources for the text (available with the access code).  You should be able to upload the data file right to bright stat.

  1. Create a scatterplot of the data. Post the results and interpret what you see. (20 points (10 points for correctly creating the scatter plot, 5 for posting and 5 for correct interpretation)

Interpretation: A positive linear relationship is shown as a positive correlation exists between distress and Fmri ACC

b). Calculate correlation coefficient r. Interpret this result. Test the correlation for statistical significance. Show all hypothesis testing steps.

  1. List the Hypotheses here: (5 points)

  1. Statistics calculated with Bright Stat. Include the output of this date by copy and pasting it below. What statistics are important to note here? (20 points- 10 for posting the results and 10 for noting the important values)
  2. List the P level from the output (5 points): 0.007
  3. Are the Results are significant at α = 0.0005? Yes or No, Explain (5 points)
  4. What, if anything do these results tell you about the activity in the anterior cingulate cortex and those with self-reported social distress levels? Is there any correlation, explain your response. (10 points)
  5. Explain how using linear regression could be used to further analyze this data set, what further information could be obtained? (10 points)

Read the research study provided in the link below. Provide a small critique discussing the study, and answer the following questions: (10pointsperquestion=50)  https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jch.13409

  1. Provide a synopsis of the study, including the purpose and the variables

being studied.

  1. Are summary statistics of every variable provided?
  2. Are the model specifications discussed?
  3. Does the author discuss the analyses to suggest the assumptions of regression analysis

were not violated?

5.Do the results make sense?
